Nancy and her husband Mario lost their family members
in the earthquake that struck Haiti this year. A diabetes
sufferer without medical insurance and no regular care,
the anguish of the news sent Nancy's blood sugar spiraling
out of control. She was so ill that she was rushed
to Homestead Hospital's emergency department where
she was admitted for four days before being stable
enough to return home.
The hospital staff referred Nancy to Good News Care
Center, a free clinic in Florida City, where she was
enrolled as a patient for maintenance care. Good News
had received a Diabetes Treatment and Education grant
from Health Foundation, through which the clinic was
able to provide comprehensive care to Nancy and others
in need. Her blood sugar is now under control.
According to Good News medical director Carlos Meitzner,
M.D., " The Health Foundation grant has increased
our capacity allowing us to serve an expanding patient
base." For Nancy, the clinic's tratment gave
her a sweet
victory over diabetes.
